The end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024 had intense weeks, filled with training and travels. From the sweltering heat of Buenos Aires, tackling the slopes in the “Bajo” of San Isidro, to running through the Alps in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, with a stop in Madrid and its parks. While each of these places is incredible, constant travel complicates training. But that's what life is about – doing our best with the tools we have to achieve our goals.
Finally, at the beginning of April, the moment came. Standing at the starting line, which also marks the finish line of my training sessions and the starting point of this final adventure: Patagonia Run and its formidable 110 km challenge.
Patagonia Run began as an ultra-trail race in 2010 with a maximum distance of 80 km. Over more than a decade, it has grown into a globally recognized sports event, featuring a 100-mile race with seven different distances, offering a week of incredible experiences in northern Patagonia, specifically in San Martín de los Andes, Argentina.
The organization of this race is one of its strongest points. It's a perfect example of the synergy between the public and private sectors, placing this destination on the map of major international trail running events and turning that week in April into a peak tourism season.
Participating in such events is unique. It's not just about the adventure you plunge into, but also about the vibrant atmosphere that envelops the town. It's that special feeling of major sports events, where everyone feels a mix of nerves and excitement.
This wasn't my first time, yet it always feels special. As usual, the atmosphere was electric, and the trails were grueling. I struggled with stomach pains from the 50 km mark and faced the daunting slopes of the Andes, but finally, after 110 km and more than 6,000 meters of elevation gain, I made it. The emotions and sensations of being part of such events are unparalleled. You run the same trails as the professionals, confronting the same challenges and emotions, while also savoring the stunning landscapes of Patagonia. It's an incredible experience, especially considering we actually pay for this!
Patagonia Run is a non-stop mountain race for individual participants, offering seven distances to suit everyone from beginners to experienced ultramarathoners.
This race is more than just a race; it's a testament to human endurance and the indomitable spirit of adventure. Every step, every breath, and every drop of sweat is a tribute to the rugged beauty of Patagonia and the camaraderie of the trail running community. Whether you're a seasoned ultramarathoner or a trail running newcomer, Patagonia Run promises an unforgettable experience that pushes your limits and connects you deeply with nature and fellow runners.
So… lace up your shoes and embrace the challenge. Patagonia awaits!
